Mindfulness is a state of attending to the present moment non-judgmentally with full awareness. However, the life in modern society has often pulls us into 'mindlessness' rather than 'mindfulness'.

While clinical interventions have proven to be effective for conditions like chronic pain and depression, retention and attrition issues remain, especially when the intervention is discontinued.

How can we practice mindfulness as an enduring life-long habit, rather than a temporary fix?

The Idea

Illustrated by Annemiek Klamer

Revolving around enhancing the effect of savouring, Bloom⦁e is designed to help individuals achieve a higher level of happiness

The Design

Designed as an aesthetically pleasing ornament that blends seamlessly into a domestic environment, the sculpture-like bionic plant consists of a vase, black stems and calming, mint-green-coloured flowers.

The flowers, mimicking real-life blooming, become more vibrant and begin to blossom as the user engages in activities contributing to happiness.

Paired with an intuitive mobile app, the device signals optimal moments, stores personal accomplishments and performs multi-sensory, interactive rituals with the user to help create a sense of belonging and boost self-motivation.

While designers often treat attention demand as a negative effect to be minimised or avoided, Bloom•e demonstrates that it's possible to intentionally design meaningful experiences for both active and peripheral awareness.
