Background

Approaching the end of its 7-year lifecycle, the enterprise-oriented product is due for an enclosure redesign to support updated hardware and keep pace with evolving market expectations.

The Objective

Refresh the Mini PC with an elevated aesthetic for the established customer base while preserving its recognisable visual language, complemented by new accessories including a dedicated stand and rear cable cover.

Explorations

The ideation phase began with an in-depth analysis of the Mini PC market, researching industry trends, aesthetic evolutions and most importantly, how manufacturing processes are adapted to overcome design constraints:

Elevated Cover Designs The premium and high-performance segments have shifted from traditional single-material panels toward multi-material constructions, enabling richer CMF variation and broader design opportunities.

Distinctive Visual Language Multi-material integration paired with sophisticated detail execution such as metallic finishes and colour-matched prints, steers the product away from conventional aesthetics, establishing a signature and memorable identity.

Organic Form Factors Rounded edge transitions, fluid geometry and sculpted contours introduce dynamic visual depth and elevate the overall design with a refined appearance.

Iteration 1

The concept looks back to the original design, incorporating nature-inspired ridge lines and varying levels of depth on the front cover to create a more dynamic surface.

Stand Design

Incorporating similar organic design principles, the dedicated stand provides ease of access and maintains visual consistency in the standing configuration.

Surface Texture

In addition to standard gloss, matte, and brushed finishes, the prototypes also experimented with a dripping texture that adds tactile and visual contrast, cementing it's unique identity.

Iteration 2

The concept evolved around the idea of extending front design across the left panel, which was typically achieved with an L-shaped cover. However, after an evaluation of various concepts, the design favoured the traditional front cover assembly while recreating side features through metal production techniques, minimising time-intensive structural overhauls and complex supply chain adaptations.

During this stage, minor adjustments were made in response to updated EE specifications and component placement, while the default orientation was shifted to a standing position to align with the previous configuration.

The Design

Modernised Form

The design reinterprets the product line's established family styling, modernising its visual language through balanced proportions, enriched geometric depth and refined details.

The optimised front ventilation holes feature a subtle, 3D-sculpted concave profile across the diagonal slots, creating a dynamic focal point while improving airflow intake.

Visual Continuity

The same diagonal motif is mirrored on the left panel with metal stamping techniques to create visual continuity once in vertical orientation.

Despite adding manufacturing complexity, the irregular-shaped parting line between the top and bottom casing offers an alternative solution to the emerging aesthetic trend without compromising usability.

Intricate Detail

To maintain a minimalist front I/O profile, a required status light is seamlessly integrated into the power button that further decluttering the interface without modifying existing components.
